Welcome to The Vitality Project.
Today I wanted to simply ask you a very honest but pointed question. What is the most important thing in your life? I think the answer to this question might vary depending upon many different variables. However, in my opinion, there can only be one and only one correct response. My health and well-being.
You see, without good health, there is really nothing worth while that you can possibly achieve. If you have a chronic disease that takes all of your energy and time just to enable you to get from one day to the next, all you are doing is surviving…not living. Chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, arthritis and vascular disease leads to increased levels of morbidity. Morbidity is a state of poor health where your level of function is adversely affected and the over-reliance of medical care combined with a general inabilty to complete the activities of daily living places you in a state of suspended animation. You are not really sick where your life is at risk, but you are far from being healthy and this has eroded your quality of life to the point that places you on the sidelines of life.
Take a look around you, do you see many people who are in this state every day? Do you see many people like this? People who are unwell, have chronic ill-health and cannot function physically, mentally or socially that well anymore.
When you have achieved excellence in health and well-being, you will look, act and feel much younger than your birth certificate would indicate. You are capable of most any task and your mind, body and spirit are working in top form. Your capacity to work, learn, create and improve continue to flourish.
With optimum health comes optimum opportunity to continue to grow, contribute and reach your full potential as a human being!
When you don’t have your health….you have nothing!
Everything you are, do and become is directly a product of your health status. Your level of happiness and fulfillment is reflected upon the degree to which your life represents a high quality standard.
Welcome to The Vitality Project!
In today’s blog, I would like discuss the issue of success and how it can be attained. You see, for years I have been a health coach, chiropractor, athletic trainer, and nutritionist. I have also had the unique opportunity to work with many people in their quest for improved health and wellness. In so doing, the struggles some people have had in trying to reach their health goals typically related to their methodology and how it was applied.
In order to loose weight, improve fitness, have more energy, get off your meds for chronic health concerns, have the body you have always wanted and age well, there has to be a methodology in place in order for you to get to where you want to go. I think that this methodology can not only allow you to acheive the type of health you have always wished for, but it will also allow you to acheive other things in your life.
The four C’s are, concentration, consistency, committment and clarity.
In order to succeed with a health, wellness and anti-aging program, there will be some requirements that are absolutley necessary. Concentration is a very important requirement because your mental powers are amoung the strongest and most influencial in ther achievement of outcomes. For example, I frequently see people in the gym working-out either on their own or with a trainer. Some of which are seasoned trainers and some beginners. What I typically witness, however is a general lack of concentration in their efforts. They are more concerned with their I-phone, looking around, listening to music or talking. They “go through the motions” while at the gym and this is why their results will be quite modest if any.
In my opinion, there is no way that you will achieve success on a specialized health program despite having a health coach if you are not consistent with your efforts. Even if you make mistakes and your efforts are not perfect, if your actions, at least are preformed with a great deal of consistency, the likelihood of success greatly increases. All you would need is some refinements, if you have consistency as part of the equation, goals will be so much easier for you to achieve.
Committment is a mind-set and an attitude dervived from a change in thinking. This factor, is however extrordinarity powerful in the attainment of any goal. If you are personally committed to the improvement of your health and well-being, this demonstrates that you are taking ownership over your health and the resultant responsibility that brings. Nothing can stop you, if you have this trait.
Clarity implies that if you know what you want and are focused upon achieving it, your direction or path to achievement will be paved in your mind. All you need is to walk on it!
Welcome to The Vitality Project
I wanted to write this blog in direct reference to how your beliefs impact your results. Many of you who read this blog and may consider being a client have a few things in common, you have struggled with your health and want to look and feel better. You want to age better, look younger for your age and have a renewed sense of vitality. However you need a personal coach to help you in your quest. This is a great proposition admittedly, but your beliefs have a direct effect upon your level of success.
It doesn’t really matter what I do or say to you regarding the various strategies which can be instituted to help you achieve a positive outcome. You need to believe in the process and, more importantly in yourself. Self belief will allow you to battle and defeat adversity, handle disappointments, set-backs and bad days that you may occaisonally have.
When it gets tough, you want to eat something you shouldn’t, you dont want to cook your food, you don’t want to go to the gym or complete your cardio and you want to just party and be like everyone else. Self belief will come to the rescue every time. It will ground you, affirm you and keep you motivated to attain greatness within your self.
Self belief is a self affirming reminder that you know that you will be sucessful because you believe in your own ability as a human being and the process that you are following to it’s completion.
When you truly believe in yourself, you will be unstoppable in your quest for optimum health and well-being as you age. You will also be unstoppable in your career, human relationships and your ability to inspire others will be magnified. You will become an example for all to look to and discover inspiration. When you get to this point, you will have achieved the ultimate goal of The Vitality Project.
Welcome to The Vitality Project!
I wanted to focus upon this title in this blog because, like yesterday’s posting this is something that I hear quite frequently from various people who have previously tried or are currently trying to change their bodies for the better. The first issue regarding this theme is this, although you don’t have to go to a fitness facility to improve the way you look and feel, it’s quite difficult to get the same effect at home. I think that if you are participating in some type of regular physical activity such as walking, some yoga, tai-chi, stretching or you use tubing, fitness bands and swiss balls, eventually your body will reach a plateau. These types of fitness programs are a great start, however they will rarely yeild the type of results you seek.
Going to a fitness club has too many benefits to mention in comparison with home exercise, walking programs, cycling, gardening or other recreational pursuits. The ability to improve your body compositon is vastly improved the moment you step inside that door. The rest is literally up to you. Now of course, you will need competent instruction which is lacking in most fitness clubs. Nevertheless, it is available and so is a plethora of different types of fitness equipment suited for all shapes and sizes.
The really important issue I have with the theme of this blog is the asssociated attitudinal connitation which accompanies it. Let me ask you the reader this question. Has anything that you have ever done leading to the attainment of a difficult goal involved anything resembling what you like?
Lets face it folks, reaching difficult goals is tough, involves committment, hard work, dedication and discipline. When were these attributes associated with a pleasurable experience? The truth is, in most cases they are NOT.
I didn’t study for years because I liked it. I didn’t work by butt off for my photoshoot because it was fun. I don’t get up at 6 Am. every morning, work 8 hours, cook my food, tend to my house, work with my clients, go to the gym, go stairclimbing all because I like it. Of course I like my work and cooking and certain elements of my day, but I do what I do because I want a certain result and my actions equate to a specific result. Like it or not.
To be very honest, most times I really don’t enjoy the experience of going to the gym. However, I know that going there and doing what I do will yeild the type of results that I seek. That being; a better version of myself, a healthier, stronger, fitter, younger man who enjoys a high degree of health and well-being. I think that is a fair trade-off.
For those of you who only do what they like. This is the reason why you will fail at acheiving the best in your health, fitness, career and financial goals. This is commonly referred to as getting out of your comfort zone. Haven’t you been there long enough?
I thought this was an excellent title because this is the phrase I hear most often when I talk to people about their health, especially how it relates to weight-loss. In my over 27 years as a health and wellness provider, chiropractor, health coach and anti-aging specialist this phrase has been used most frequently after I asked the person or people what they had previously done to improve their body and their health. Now I will openly admit that there are a plethora of books, tapes, clubs, programs and diets which all purport to do the same thing, get you the results you want. Some of these programs are better than otherss for a multitiude of reasons some of which include poor scientific validity, poor oversight, poor methodology, poor expertise and lack of proper coaching.
To be honest, I don’t mind admitting that I am rather direct with my approach to trying to solve individual health issues but I can also assure you that I tell the truth and express my honest opinion in a manner which always acts in the client’s best interest. That said, let me just state that the above title of this blog is alot of nonsence. Its simply a way of saying…I am a hopeless, helpless victim, please take my hand and help me. If you take a close look at the obesity research, the mechanisms by which humans become overweight or obese are quite well understood at this point. The same can be said regarding the methods to improve body composition. Folks, there is only one basic way to lose excess body fat and improve the amount of muscle you have on your body frame.
Any long-term improvements in body composition are caused by changes in nutritional intake and the participation in an exercise program. Period.
I am not taking into consideration, motivation, support networks and coaching intervention. Although these factors are all important, they will not cause direct changes in body composition. When I ask these people some pointed questions regarding what they really tried, the truth quite often becomes revealed. People rarely can change their diets to the extent which will yeild the type of results they want and they frequently do not exercise correctly. The degree of exercise volume and intensity required to actually change your body is rarely achieved by most people. They fail to get the results they want because of certain factors, the least of which involves lack of ability. The people who tell me that they “tried everything and nothing worked” lack direction, knowledge, belief and determination. They didn’t get the results they wanted after two months so they gave-up. Most just find that it is just too much work!
I can tell you from my own experiences that most people give up their quest for a better body and better health because it’s a hell of a lot easier to maintain the status quo. To those of you who have previously allowed this excuse to become an obstacle to your success…it’s time to re-think this pointless excuse which you conveniently use to fool yourself into believing that you are not personally responsible for your own level of health and well-being.
As a professional health coach, I can tell you, I have heard it all before.
Hello friends and welcome to The Vitality Project!!!
This is the first blog posted on the site, the completion of which is forthcoming.
I suspect the site will be fully operational by February 2013, however the site has been an ambition of mine for several years now so waiting for a few more weeks will ensure that the site is user-friendly and completed to my very high and exacting standards.
Those of you who actually know me as a human being will attest to the fact that I am not a self-ascribed egomaniac or self-absorbed narcissist. I am, however very self-actualized and know who I am and am extremely proud of it.
I have paid my dues many times over and have worked extremely hard at acquiring the knowledge and the wherewithal to impart a reliable source of health information to others. It is my intended aspiration that The Vitality Project will accomplish this task!
When I got serious about creating The Vitality Project, the admission that “Walking The Walk” would somehow loom large was a distinct reality. I had watched and listened in utter disgust to those around us who have taken it upon themselves to act as the pervaders of health advice, most of which, they very obviously and seemingly have not taken themselves!
I was also inclined to think that although my opinion relative to the subject matter in question could be argued, the way I looked could not be judged any other way.
So, I got to work my friends and I MEAN work!!
I trained and went on a nutritional regimen which lasted from January1st, 2012-July 7th, 2012….and I proceeded to get into the best shape of my lifetime!
I did so despite chronic injury, sudden unemployment, personal stressors and ridicule from others, some of whom are close to me.
The point I am trying to make is that, I committed to this event not just as a milestone to celebrate my 55th birthday but to prove that a person (in this case myself), can achieve great things in their lives even through adversity. The type of adversity life continually throws in our way and subsequently provides excuses for why we continually fail in the achievement of our goals.
I was not going to let Anything get in the way of my ability to achieve this goal in my life. So, I endeavored to hire a professional photographer to document this achievement. I posted some photos of myself on my personal FB page to chronicle the effort and share my success with my rather small group of FB friends. I struggled with this decision as exposing myself to this degree of scrutiny is not something I would normally entertain.
Be that as it may, a few of the photos taken that day are posted on The Vitality Project website and will be available when the site is fully operational.
My intent is clearly to demonstrate what is possible for an average man who is not genetically gifted from a physical standpoint and who never had any natural athletic aptitude. The point obviously being, “if I can do it, so can you”.
The Vitality Project is NOT about my achievements, my photos or about me at all actually. It’s about personal change, commitment, focus and improving the health, well-being and quality of life of others and how those individuals can, by their own positive life attitudes consequently can inspire those around them.
If anything, my modest example adds an added degree of credibility to the information, coaching and helpful counsel offered to the members of The Vitality Project.
To turn a rather dated phrase, “if you want to talk the talk, walk the walk”.
Do you know others who have this attitude and live it in their own lives?…if so stay close to them so that you may gain from them intangible inspiration which may help to drive your own personal change!
WELCOME TO THE VITALITY PROJECT!!
