Hello My Friends
Welcome To The Vitality Project!
As a professional health coach concerned with the health and well-being of my clients it is my intention to improve your well-being and longevity by using the principles of nutrition, fitness, diet, lifestyle dynamics, and anti-aging medicine.
In the field of nutrition, trends regarding the newest food trend established by a guru or celebrity are always sure to get a great deal of attention. Some of these trends purport success in weight-loss or the ability to detoxify your body. Whatever the claim, is there any truth or fact-based information behind these trends? Let’s find out be examining a few nutritional trends.
- Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are a traditional food consumed in central and South America. It is a functional food that contains a high amount of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids which are important in human health. They also contain fiber, protein and chemicals known as polyphenols that are free-radical scavengers. Chia seeds are similar to flax seed in their nutritional value and are worth trying as a condiment. Although the human research is limited regarding chia, it seems like a good food choice.
Agave is a plant native to Mexico and its leaves can be processed into an alternative sweetener from the syrup. Although the product may be lower on the glycemic scale, the fact that most of the carbohydrate is in the form of fructose may be an issue with people who are diabetic. The human research regarding agave is lacking so I would avoid this sweetener.
- Eating Clean
This trend refers to eating a diet which only contains fresh whole, non-processed foods like vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish, organic meats and cold-pressed oils. This is a food trend that everyone should consider trying for an extended period of time because of the effects this would have upon their health. Your risk of chronic disease would greatly decrease and you would add quality years to your life if you could sustain this diet. Certainly variety would not be an issue here.
- Good Bacteria
Another food trend is to consume foods that contain high concentrations of bacteria which normally inhabit our gastrointestinal system in large numbers. Bacteria like acidophilus, bifidus and lactobacillus are important allies to our health status. Consuming natural yogurt, kefir or sauerkraut is an excellent way to populate your gut with these bacterial friends. Bacteria help with digestion, elimination, decrease infections, improve motility, the immune response and maintain the proper PH of our digestive tract. This is another great idea and a trend I can support.
- Coconut Water
The consumption of this product has greatly increased over the last year and I am not sure why as there is no evidence that this product is any better than spring water. Although it has a nice flavour and is a modest of minerals, it has 50 calories per cup and it’s not cheap. If you want a nice way to rehydrate yourself, drink fresh spring water and save your money.
Remember….your quality of life is the measurement of successful living regardless of your age.
