I wanted to address this topic because I have been a health coach for over 28 years and understand its importance in the improvement of health, well-being and quality of life in people of varying health status. Health and lifestyle coaching can be an important tool which can be utilized to manage complex and simple health concerns effecting the body and mind. Lifestyle modification strategies based upon health promotion theory and prevention can be applied to a large population or a single person with equal vigour. Public health coaching strategies aimed at improving physical activity, increasing the consumption of more fruits and vegetables with less consumption of fast foods, sugar and snack foods has previously been shown to decrease weight, waist size and body mass index. The various methods employed included telephone interviews, web-based and using mobile technology.
Although, there is a lot of evidence that a population-based approach utilizing a health coaching methodology is effective in modifying health-related behaviors. I can’t emphasize enough the impact that individual health coaching has upon the health outcomes of individual people. Wellness coaching gets you involved with the process of making you a healthier person; it can make you feel engaged and provides you with responsibility.
I believe that health coaching is an active process with a shared accountability between you and your coach. Getting actively involved in your own health care is personally empowering and can lead to a great sense of control and quality of life.
Regular health coaching follow-up weather it occurs privately, at work or with a community health worker can positively influence individual health behaviors for an extended period of time. The longer you can sustain healthy changes to your lifestyle, the more effective this strategy can become. Health coaching can not only motivate you but provide you with information, guidance, health assessment, programming and regular feedback which is crucial to a positive outcome. Health coaching should encourage self-learning, accountability and personal empowerment. It should encompass personal flexibility and take into account personal preference, ethnicity and gender. A good health coach will try to improve and develop your skills and leadership qualities by providing you with an opportunity to take charge of your own health and wellness outcomes.
It is my own personal recommendation that, you try this strategy if other previous methods have not given you the results that you need and desire. Sometimes, we all need some help to reach our goals! Effective health coaching with me can transform you into your own health coach!
