About Dr. Kevin J. McLaughlin
After attending McLaughlin Collegiate he attended Wilfred Laurier and Brock Universities where he graduated with distinction and was awarded a bachelors degree in Physical and Health Education.Dr. McLaughlin was born in Oshawa Ontario and at the age of five developed a very severe form of asthma for which he received constant medical treatment and repeated hospitalizations. It was after this health challenge which lasted 15 years that Dr. McLaughlin became interested in the health and wellness field as a potential direction to consider for him-self personally and professionally.
Following a severe injury received at university, Dr. McLaughlin became motivated to try chiropractic care. It was after experiencing this type of health care and the subsequent benefits that Dr. McLaughlin became convinced that this is what he wanted to do with his career. Chiropractic medicine seemed to fit very well with his health philosophy, seemed logical and just made a great deal of sense.
Dr. McLaughlin was accepted and subsequently graduated from the Canadian Memorial College of Chiropractic, one of the most highly regarded colleges of its kind in the world.
Dr. McLaughlin became a radiology resident and was active as a teacher and lecturer. It was at this time when his mother Christine became ill with cancer which ultimately took her life.
This event changed Dr. McLaughlin forever.
He learned that an individual’s health status is very precious and can become compromised at any time. Dr. McLaughlin also learned that the attainment and maintenance of optimum levels of health is a process that requires a great deal of knowledge, persistence, focus and hard work.
Above all, Dr. McLaughlin learned that improved health, vitality and the resultant longevity this brings requires an investment in self.
Consequently, Dr. McLaughlin began to study clinical nutrition in greater depth because he understood the important link between nutrition, health and disease. Dr. McLaughlin also intensely studied the role exercise had upon health outcomes and became convinced that this factor additionally was essential in the attainment of optimum health and vitality.
As a result of his studies, Dr. McLaughlin earned applied degrees in nutrition and became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the prestigious National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Dr. McLaughlin also realized that, although he could help people with their complex health issues in more complete and important ways, he understood that the skills individuals need to acquire better health outcomes need to be taught because, either most people never obtained this type of education in school nor never attained it themselves.
Subsequently, Dr. McLaughlin enrolled in the School of Health at the University of New England in Armidale Australia to study health promotion at the Ph.D. level and subsequently studied there for two years.
Since this time, Dr. McLaughlin was been very involved in corporate health, public speaking, writing newspaper columns and working with individuals to improve their own health and vitality. Dr. McLaughlin has practiced in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Australia, Newfoundland/Labrador and currently resides in Hamilton, Ontario.
Dr. McLaughlin trains at the gym regularly, participates in outdoor stair-climbing, ergometric rowing, consumes a healthy diet, takes nutritional supplements, enjoys hiking and loves nature.
Although Dr. McLaughlin ascribes to a wellness-based philosophy, he continues to be evidenced-based in his approach to health care delivery and models of care.
He also believes that a health care provider should “walk the walk” and not just “talk the talk”. Dr. McLaughlin practices what he teaches and tries to set an example of sustained health and vitality which others will follow and draw inspiration from.
According to Dr. McLaughlin, “The Vitality Project involves a collaborative process of do as I do….not do as I say!”
